5 Minutes With Kirk Willcox Photography...
Can you tell our readers where you're from and a little bit about yourself?
Hello, I’m Kirk 😊
I love watching crime shows, trashy reality TV and can 100% confirm I am addicted to WWE Wrestling. I will try my best to avoid this sounding like an online dating profile however I can’t make any promises.
I was born in Tamworth, NSW with my twin sister Lisa before my family & I moved to the beautiful Gold Coast where I would begin primary school. I have lived on the Gold Coast ever since and it’s where I call home.
I have been a professional wedding photographer for over 6 years and regularly photograph weddings on the Gold Coast, Byron Bay as well as internationally.
How long have you been in the industry and how would you describe your style?
I have been photographing weddings for over 6 years now and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I can honestly say I LOVE my job especially when I get to meet fun, positive and adventurous couples.
I would describe my photographic style as being bright, minimalistic and timeless. I like to take a natural and candid approach when possible however I also offer direction when necessary. I understand that most couples are not used to being photographed which is why I try to make the day as fun and relaxed as possible. Generally, this involves laughing and making jokes at my own expense!
Where is your favourite location to shoot?
Anywhere outdoors, I particularly love locations with mountains and lots of greenery and trees
Most memorable wedding you have photographed?
I photographed a wedding in Greece last year which was such an awesome experience to say the least. Greece is one of my favourite places so it really was a special moment to be able to photograph a wedding there. The couple were from the UK and I had the best time with the bride & groom as well as all their guests. At the end of the wedding I felt like family, I had such a great time with everyone. The night ended with a conga line which I think sums up perfectly just how fun this wedding was. I kept thinking who would have thought this kid who grew up in Tamworth, NSW would end up travelling the world doing what he loves, it was definitely a surreal experience.
Do you have any tips for our brides and grooms to be on how they can prepare to get the best images on their big day?
I always recommend chatting with your photographer in advance about when the best time will be for your ceremony and location photos. The best and most beautiful light will always be around sunset so ensuring your location photos happen around this time will deliver the best results.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding past or future who would you choose?
Ok so I’m going to be sneaky and pick two, a male celebrity and a female celebrity.
The male celebrity who’s wedding I would LOVE to photograph would have to be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I have been a huge fan of The Rock probably before most people even knew who he was. I am obsessed with WWE Wrestling so this would be a dream for sure. It is so impressive to see a guy who has such a strong work ethic, sense of humour and just all-around awesome human being achieve success and not let it go to his head. He really is a great role model and I don’t know how anyone could not be a fan of The Rock 😊
The female celebrity would have to be Sandra Bullock. Queen Sandra is one of my favourite actresses and her sense of humour and comedic timing is brilliant. Anyone who has seen Miss Congeniality will agree that Sandra is drop dead gorgeous and let’s face it she would look stunning in a wedding dress.
